Professional Profile

The Diploma/ BSc (Hons) Substance Use and Misuse Studies is a very challenging programme. As you work through your modules you will develop personally and professionally by utilising the professional, academic and personal experiences of your own and those of your fellow students, teachers and researchers.

This programme has been developed in line with the Government’s call for a skilled workforce in the substance misuse field and has been mapped against DANOS. This programme will help you to develop your knowledge, skills and competence in relevant DANOS competences according to your role profile and your professional and developmental needs.

The DANOS has been mapped against the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework. The Agenda for Change and the new NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF) from the Department of Health in England aim to support personal development and career progression by supporting staff to develop their skills to the full and by ensuring better links between education, development and career and pay progression for all NHS staff. Skills for Health is currently mapping the DANOS against the Knowledge and Skills Framework.

Therefore whether you are on a Diploma or Degree programme you will be developing relevant skills preparing you to work effectively with individuals, groups and fellow professionals in the broad area of the substance misuse field.

Profile on Completion of the Diploma in Substance Use and Misuse Studies

  • On completion of the diploma level programme you will have enhanced your confidence and competence in working in the substance misuse field with individuals or groups in a variety of settings. In addition, you will have developed your skills to debate new information and ideas about substance misuse related problems, which will inform your practice.
  • You will have further developed your ability to be a flexible, assertive and reflective independent practitioner working in partnership with individuals and communities. In addition you will be confident in contributing effectively in multi-disciplinary teams, an essential skill for working in the arena of substance misuse. You will know to respect the rights, cultural differences and preferences of individuals, in order to promote their autonomy and empower them to make choices about their needs for interventions.
  • During the programme you will have learnt and continue to build on a range of transferable skills beyond substance misuse interventions, including problem solving, information technology, leadership, management and decision-making. These skills will enable you to work in a range of settings, to take an active part in planning and implementation of effective interventions for substance problem users, using appropriate evidence to rationalise their actions and continually evaluate the quality of interventions provided.
  • On completion of the programme, you will have an in-depth knowledge of local and national policy agendas, for example the Government drugs policies, Drugs and Alcohol National Occupational Standards (DANOS) the National Service Frameworks, the NHS Plan, NTA Models of Care, Criminal Justice Interventions, substance misuse policies and local needs, and you will be able to utilise this knowledge effectively in planning and prioritising of substance misuse interventions.
  • You will be an adaptable, reflective professional able to provide effective high quality substance misuse interventions in a variety of settings. You will have a sound theoretical knowledge and analytical skills necessary to identify and respond appropriately to the needs of people with substance misuse problems. You will be able to judge and predict the impact of social, cultural, political and economic factors, which influence substance use and problem use and choose appropriate substance misuse strategies. You will have the skills and knowledge to be able to evaluate and question substance use and misuse interventions to inform your future practice.
  • Finally, after successful completion of the programme you will continue to develop the necessary personal and professional attributes to lead individuals and teams, share knowledge and facilitate learning in others. You will also be able to recognise your own development, and lifelong learning needs in a successful career as a health or social care professional in a multicultural society.

Profile on Completion of the BSc in Substance Use and Misuse Studies

  • On completion of the degree level programme you will have enhanced your confidence and competence in the delivery of substance misuse interventions, in a variety of settings. In addition, you will have developed skills in leadership, decision making and strategic planning that enable you to take a lead in influencing substance misuse strategies. You will have enhanced your skills to debate and critically analyse new information and ideas, which will promote further development of substance misuse practice. You will be able to make professional sound judgements and will be committed to lifelong learning.
  • You will have enhanced your ability to be a flexible, assertive and reflective independent practitioner working in partnership with individuals and communities. You will know to respect the rights, cultural differences and preferences of clients, in order to promote their autonomy and empower them to make choices about their substance misuse related needs.
  • During the course, you will have learnt a range of transferable skills beyond substance misuse interventions, including problem solving, information technology, leadership, management, strategic planning and decision-making. These skills will enable you to take a lead in the planning and implementation of effective substance misuse interventions, critically questioning the evidence to rationalise your actions and continuously evaluate the quality of interventions provided. In addition you will have gained appropriate knowledge, competence and confidence to contribute effectively to the substance misuse agenda.
  • You will be able to provide appropriate, competent and innovative evidence-based substance misuse interventions demonstrating the ability to critically analyse and prioritise the needs of patient/client groups. You will be a knowledgeable and skilled practitioner, able to effectively work in partnerships with individuals, families and the community. In addition you will have also developed crucial skills in working in multi-disciplinary teams and be able to recognise their key role in contributing as an equal partner in multi-disciplinary approaches to substance use and misuse.
  • On completion of the programme, you will have an in depth knowledge of local and national policy agendas, for example the Government drugs policies, Drugs and Alcohol National Occupational Standards, the National Service Frameworks, the NHS Plan, the NTA Models of Care, Criminal Justice Interventions, substance misuse policies and local needs, and will be able to utilise this knowledge effectively in planning and prioritising of substance misuse strategies.
  • This programme will enable you to continue to develop and update your knowledge and skills. You will be critically aware of and able to act on the ethical, legal and professional legislation and guidelines as they relate to your own sphere of substance misuse practice. Your reflective skills will be further developed leading to thoughtful, quality substance misuse intervention.
  • You will be an adaptable, reflective professional able to provide effective high quality substance misuse interventions in a variety of settings. You will have a sound theoretical knowledge and analytical skills necessary to identify and respond appropriately to health needs. You will be able to judge and predict the impact of social, cultural, political and economic factors, which influence health and choose appropriate substance misuse strategies. You will have the skills and knowledge to enable you to critically evaluate and question substance misuse interventions to inform your future practice.
  • Finally, you will systematically develop the necessary personal and professional attributes to lead individuals and teams, share knowledge, provide a role model and facilitate learning in others. On completion of the programme you will be able to use the knowledge, skills and experience you have gained towards lifelong learning and further post-graduate study.
