Cultural
Competence
Problematic
drug and alcohol use within minority ethnic groups is increasingly
becoming apparent as a problem. However, the extent of the problem
is far from clear. As drug and/or alcohol use remains stigmatised
and hidden within certain cultures few people from minority ethnic
groups come forward and seek help. On the other hand, services are
not geared to care for people from different cultural backgrounds
and have proved to be insensitive to their particular needs.
This
training day is designed to give an overview on patterns and trends
of drug use amongst people from different cultures and ethnic
backgrounds and will identify gender and age differences. We will
also focus on cultural differences on perception of drug and/or
alcohol use and community’s response to substance misuse. We will
further identify the consequences of stigma on help seeking behaviour
in clients from different cultures and the attitude of staff in
health and drug services.
Particular
attention will be given to skills, attitudes and interventions
that are needed to deal in a culturally competent way with problem
drug and/or alcohol use amongst members from different cultures.
