Sex and Drugs and Alcohol

The use of legal and illegal substances to enhance pleasure and increase sexual performance has been common throughout history. Only with the onset of the HIV epidemic has the relationship between drug use and risky sexual behaviour become the focus of attention.

The focus of this training day is on the link between the use of legal and illegal substances and sexual behaviour. This workshop will look in detail on what is known about

  • the effects of substances such as Heroin, Cocaine, Amphetamines, Ecstasy, Crack and Alcohol on risky sexual behaviour,
  • risky behaviour in prostitution as means to obtain drugs or money for drugs,
  • gender differences in drug taking, sexual behaviour and susceptibility to HIV,
  • and the nature of the relationship within partnerships.

The 1st part of the training day aims to provide an overview on what is known about the effects of drugs on sexual behaviour. The 2nd part will look at the implications this risky sexual behaviour may have on drug users and their sexual partners, and aims to find ways how best to respond in terms of needs for health promotion, intervention and research.
